APR 11, 2006 - Tones added to Mandarin Chinese module.

After countless hours of hard work by the administrator of the Mandarin module and the ALBIS developer, the request by numerous learners of Mandarin has been fulfilled.

The Mandarin vocabulary can now be previewed in any of four modes

  • Romanized (Hanyu Pinyin) without tones: huijin
  • Romanized (Hanyu Pinyin) with tones as diacritical marks: hūijìn
  • Romanized (Hanyu Pinyin) with tones as digits:hui1 jin4
  • Chinese characters: 灰烬
The view can be toggled by four small buttons during the preview.

Note that the answers can be entered in any form: in the Roman alphabet without tones, with tones as diacritical marks, with tones as digits, or in Chinese characters. However, ALBIS does not check whether the tones are correct; they are simply ignored (if you want ALBIS to check the tones, please send feedback to the ALBIS administrator).

Note also that the review during the testing phase (when you get something wrong, and ALBIS shows the user the correct answer) will be either in Hanyu Pinyin without tones, or Chinese characters, depending on which mode the user was last using during the preview. Hence, if the user previews the vocab in Chinese characters, the review will be in Chinese characters; if the user last previewed in any of the other modes, the review will be in Hanyu Pinyin without tones.
