What are "also accepted terms" and what should I put?
The fields for "also acceptable terms" are for synonyms in your language - words which are, in addition to the main word, also the equivalent of the English word, and which a student might conceivably enter in response to the cue in the foreign language he/she is learning. For example, let's say a German user called Hans is trying to learn English, and the word is "quick". Hans sees in German, the word for "quick", which is "schnell". Now, if Hans already knows some English, he might enter "rapid" or "fast" or "speedy". These all mean "schnell" and of course they have the same meaning as "quick". But if the database has only one word ("quick"), ALBIS will tell Hans that he is wrong, if he enters "rapid". So, if a word has synonyms, these should be entered. If the English word is "quick", other words also accepted by ALBIS (such as "rapid", "fast", "speedy") are added into the "also accepted" fields. Note that you should decide whether to add synonyms or not, according to the peculiarities of your language. There is no need to translate the "also accepted" words from English. Even if there are 5 synonyms in English, if your language has only one word, then enter only one word. But the flip side is that, even if the English word has no synonyms listed, while the word in your language has some synonyms, these should be added. In conclusion, there is no need to translate the synonyms; instead, they should be added as you see fit. |
