How is vocabulary in languages with non-Roman scripts handled?
ALBIS assumes that everyone in the world can read the Latin (Roman) script (even if they don't speak English).
If a user is learning the vocabulary of a language with its own (non-Roman) writing system
(such as Arabic, Russian, Thai, or Japanese), words will be displayed for the user in
the transliterated (Latin or Roman) version by default, but the user can also toggle
the display script to the native script.
Meanwhile, the user can enter the words into
ALBIS in the transliterated (Latin or Roman) version, as well as
in the native script.)
For users whose native language has its own script, the prompts are displayed in the native
script. For example, a Russian will see word prompts in Cyrillic, and a Japanese will see
word prompts in Hiragana/Kanji.
How does this affect the partners maintaining the module?
For some, where transliteration is easy (such as Greek or Russian), only the native version
needs to be entered into the module, and ALBIS will automatically generate a Latin (Roman) version.
For other languages, where transliteration is hard (such as Japanese, Hindi, Arabic, or Hebrew),
the person maintaining the module must enter two versions of each word (native script and Roman). ALBIS
then automatically selects the appropriate version to display.
