Why are there 1500 words in the database?
They say that you need about 3000 words to be able to speak a language (if not fluently, at least conversationally). Hence, initially, the plan was to include 3000 words in 100 levels (of 30 words each). However, this was changed to 1500 because, it turns out, words that are shared by all languages are quite limited. Even in the smaller database of 1500 words, there are many words which do not have an equivalent in one or more languages. |
